Errata & corrections

No book is perfect, and mine is no exception. In fact, it always amazes me how many errors manage to creep in, in spite of our best efforts. My manuscript has been read and re-read by me, a very good editor, a couple of proof readers, and an indexer. At some point you really do just stop seeing the errors. Unfortunately, while it's easy to correct them here on the web site, you can't do it in a book once the ink hits the paper.

So, in the spirit of owning up to one's mistakes, here are the ones I've caught so far:

The biggest problem seems to have been in the maps. One reader even wrote that I had been "badly served" by whoever did the maps. I confess—it was me, and I have to take responsibility for what they are and are not.

Thus, the dates on the maps on pages 53 (Chancellorsville), 75 (Manassas Gap), and 88 (Robertson's Tavern) are incorrect. All these battles were fought in 1863, not 1864. Otherwise they are all correct.

The map on page 239, showing the greatest extent of the Confederate penetration, has the 17th Massachusetts next to the 57th Massachusetts at the end of the "bulge." This should be the 17th Michigan.

On page xv, in the sixth line of the first full paragraph, should be "I needed to begin with the first..." and the last sentence of the last paragraph should read "they played an important part in several late war battles."

On page 106, second paragraph, sixth line, should be "nor sent back his reserve."

On page 41, in the caption for map, French's division angles southwest, not southeast.

The illustrations on pages 47 and 94 are from Henry Heth's A System of Target Practice rather than Hardee's Tactics.

On page 160, the gun illustrated is in Fort Totten, not Fort Stevens, which did not have any guns mounted "en barbette."

On page 182, he first sentence of the second paragraph should read "commander of the Thirty-first Georgia" rather than of Evans's brigade.

In the photo insert section, the captions at the bottom regarding the Branscomb brothers got switched on the second page. The brothers are correctly identified, but James Branscomb was killed at Harris Farm and Lewis at Harpers Ferry. This has been corrected on the web site.

That's what we've caught so far. If you find others, please let me know.
